Good that you reacted. Bullet Journaling is a prefect way of keeping track. The drawing just adds to it.

Amen! I cringe everytime a bujo newbie posts in the French FB group I’m in saying “I’m so scared to get started, I can’t draw, I’ll be ashamed to show my pages compared to your beautiful bujos”. Uuuuuugh! The bullet journal, which was a simple, flexible and forgiving system created to help people get organized has become another area where competition and “keeping up with the Joneses” is the norm. This makes me sad and mad all at once! I love seeing beautiful doodles and decorated journals, but this is a bonus. It doesn’t suit me and I’ve never (and will never) feel compelled to keep up with it! Okay, rant’s over! LOL Thanks for sharing your creativity with us!

Exactly True! You said it so well. I love your pages! I can’t draw like you, but I still get ideas from your work.

Preach it! This is one of the reasons why I think everyone who is even remotely considering starting a bullet journal should check out Ryder Carroll’s site first, because the person who INVENTED the system uses a very minimalist, un-artsy, simplistic design. It works for him, as it works for many other people, but because such photos aren’t as eye-catching on social media it can be easy to forget that they’re perfectly respectable interpretations of the bullet journal in and of themselves.

I’m starting to feel like a groupie as much as I talk about Ryder Carroll, but it’s SO important to start there. Thank you for your comment!

Heidi – this is Sarah Cook that worst to work with you at DE (forever ago!!) I think you’ve convinced me to try out bullet journaling (did I use that correctly?) I’m not artistic AT ALL but I have decent handwriting and I like to color so I think I’ll be able to make it work. I just got a $3 notebook to try it out and see if I will stick with it more than a week – unlike all my other planners 🙂 . Love your blog and insta – you are endlessly creative and it’s awesome that you inspire & teach others with your gift!
P.S. I laughed when you said you never read the comments section, read them anyway, and then regretted it – that happens to me every. single. time.
P.P.S I love that your chickens have star wars names – both of my boys ended up with SW names – how my husband tricked me into that, I’ll never know (jedi mind trick?).

Sarah! Hi!! Yes, you did use the verb “to bullet journal” correctly! 😉 I’m glad you’re going to start! And remember to check out the http://www.bulletjournal.com site for the basics and lots of great ideas from other bullet journalers. As well as all the other usual places on social media too.
Yes, naming our chickens after Star Wars women only emphasized how few women there really are in the Star Wars universe! And Maz was one of our favorite character names and she turned out to be a rooster. So sad.
Anyway, I’d love to see how you’re liking your bullet journal after you get going! 🙂

Hi Heidi–I think this is a really interesting post. I’m working on a story about what some of the benefits are of dedicating the time to making your bullet journal beautiful (and when it is and isn’t useful)–wondering if you would like to be interviewed for it? You can reach me at ahensel@inc.com

I just came here from there, so glad to have found you! (I posted as radiosilents on that article.) I was promoted to an art director position at my job a few months ago and have been trying to figure out how I can better keep track of everything that needs tracking – which is a LOT! I think something like what you’re doing here will really help me keep better organized and efficient at my job. Thank you!

Heidi, thanks for the honesty. I literally found out 2 days ago what a bullet journal was (is?) and have already purchased by first notebook and pen. I’m super excited about it, especially about the fact that you stress there’s no right or wrong way to do this.. Why? Because it’s a personal thing. Do what works and get rid of what doesn’t. I love the stripped down version for work and the dressed up version for home (giving me space to doodle or write down stupid stuff like what movie I want to watch when it comes out). Keep doing what you’re doing!

I’m not artistic in the same way, but I love the happiness that cover your pages – whether you call it My Little Pony vomit or not. Not surprisingly, I loved Lisa Frank’s school supplies 🙂

Oh don’t get me wrong, I love all things blingy and sparkly haha. It’s just that my drawing skills are limited to stick figures and simple flowers. However I was a floral designer so I’m still artistic, it’s just different.

I think that’s what’s great about bullet journaling. It’s yours and it should fit your personality.
I just started this month and let me tell you I love it because I have all of my lists in one place and what used to be on a sticky note here and there is now in all place and I can find it. That’s how I made it personally mine. I love the color aspects too and the many choices there are for making calendars. it’s kind of dumb when someone criticizes someone else’s journal because its supposed to be up to each individual. Anyway, continue having fun!
